Wilpattu National Park is one of the oldest in Sri Lanka and is located on the West Coast 180km north of Colombo. Only 25% of the park is open to the public and there are great opportunities for viewing elephants and leopards. There can be heavy rainfall during the months of December and January and so the park receives most visitors from February to November.
The main entrance is located at Hunuwilagama in the south-east corner of the park (Google Maps). The road is accessed from the main Puttalam to Anuradhapura road where a number of accommodation options are located. The entrance is about 45 minutes by road from Anuradhapura.
Safari Costs and Timings
The entrance fee is about 25 – 30 USD per adult and the jeep hire is normally around 5000LKR for a half day safari. The jeep price is the same total for one, two, three, four, five or six people. Expect it to cost a little more if the jeep is picking up and dropping off at a hotel outside the park. Half day safaris start at 5am and 2pm. The closer to sunrise and sunset gives the best opportunity to see animals.
